Guided Biofilm Therapy

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is an evidence-based, systematic protocol designed to manage oral biofilm and calculus for prevention, therapy, and maintenance of optimal oral health. Beyond prophylaxis, this eight-step process forms the foundation for all nonsurgical periodontal and peri-implant treatments.

Utilizing advanced technologies such as AIRFLOW® MAX, PERIOFLOW® with AIRFLOW® PLUS Powder, and PIEZON® PS, GBT ensures minimally invasive, highly preventive care with exceptional comfort for both patients and clinicians. It promotes long-term oral health through personalized home care guidance, empowering patients to maintain excellent hygiene between professional visits.

GBT delivers measurable results—enhancing patient satisfaction, recall adherence, and clinical efficiency. Peer-reviewed research confirms GBT’s ergonomic advantages, effectiveness, and economic value. A randomized clinical trial also demonstrated its ability to reduce pocket probing depths (PPD > 3mm) during non-surgical periodontal therapy, establishing it as a proven alternative to conventional scaling and root planing (SRP).

By effectively removing biofilm around teeth and implants, GBT achieves clinical outcomes equal to or better than SRP, with reduced microbial load and inflammation. Additionally, AIRFLOW® and PIEZON® technologies shorten treatment time and improve patient comfort.

The GBT protocol follows a systematic flow: assessment, biofilm disclosure, patient motivation, AIRFLOW® biofilm and stain removal, and PIEZON® PS calculus removal. Further polishing is not required after treatment.

WHY GBT?

  1. A Game Changer for Better Oral Prophylaxis
  2. Good Oral Health = Healthy Patient
  3. Proven Clinical Protocol = Optimal Results
GBT reduces the risk of caries, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.
“We can be sure only when biofilm has been completely removed.” — Nicole Einemann and Manuela Cordes, Dental Hygienists, Dr. Arendt Dental, Germany
  4. Patients Prefer GBT
No pain, high comfort—especially appreciated by children.
  5. Happy Clinicians, Relaxed Patients
Ergonomic, efficient, and stress-free workflow with precision instruments.
  6. Successful Practices
Excellent outcomes lead to satisfied patients and strong referrals.
  7. Prevention is the Future
GBT sets the standard for modern oral medicine and preventive care.
  8. An Exceptional Experience
State-of-the-art technology favored by both patients and clinicians.

HOW TO DO GBT?

  1. Assessment & Infection Control
Begin by rinsing 40 seconds with BACTERX® Pro. Diagnose and document the individual supra- and subgingival status for each patient.
  2. Disclose
Make biofilm visible and educate patients on its role in causing caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis.
  3. Motivate
Reinforce the importance of home care and professional maintenance.
  4. AIRFLOW® MAX
Gently eliminate disclosed biofilm supra- and subgingivally (up to 4mm) using AIRFLOW® MAX and AIRFLOW® PLUS Powder.
  5. PERIOFLOW®
Remove biofilm in deeper pockets (up to 9mm) with the PERIOFLOW® Nozzle and AIRFLOW® PLUS Powder.*
  6. PIEZON® PS / PI MAX
Remove calculus on teeth and around implants or restorations with PIEZON® NO PAIN PS and PI MAX Instruments.*
  7. Check
Verify complete removal of biofilm and calculus. Conventional cleanings often leave up to 50% of biofilm behind—GBT ensures thorough results. No polishing required.
  8. Recall
Invite patients to complete the GBT questionnaire and schedule their next preventive visit.
